The verse cited in the question appears in the context of a discussion by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 of the manner in which the Christian congregation at Corinth was abusing or profaning the Lord's Supper -- either by not discerning the presence of Christ's body and blood in the bread and wine; or by treating the Lord's Supper the same as an ordinary meal by combining it with food brought from their homes, which they then failed to share with everybody; or by drinking wine to the point of intoxication; or by not treating all communicants equally. As Paul then said, the illnesses which the congregation was apparently experiencing among its members (which sometimes even caused the deaths of those affected -- or, in other words, in the standard Biblical idiom, caused them to have fallen asleep) were a judgment from God against these practices and the individuals who took part in them, since they made the individuals as guilty in God's eyes as if they themselves had been responsible for Christ's death and the shedding of His blood.
