The word "them" in Psalm 2:5 refers to the entities mentioned in verses 1-3 of the same psalm (the nations, peoples, kings, and rulers of the earth, particularly when viewed as part of the fallen "world system" controlled by Satan) who are conspiring together against the Lord and against His anointed (literally, in this case, David (and, by extension, Israel), but also (prophetically) against God's promised Messiah). The psalm is making the point that, regardless of how these earthly authorities may plot and scheme to thwart God's plans, God laughs at them, for He knows that they are ultimately powerless against Him; that His plans will finally succeed; and that all who oppose His plans will in time bow the knee to Him and acknowledge His sovereignty. Further verses in the same psalm carry the same dual literal/prophetic meaning in regard to David and the Messiah: "He said to me, 'You are my son; today I have become your father. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron[b]; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.' " and " Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction"
