In Acts 10:10, Peter is described as falling into a trance, through which God symbolically communicated to him that old distinctions between Jews and Gentiles no longer applied, which ultimately led to Gentiles being received into the church. There are subconscious aspects of our minds that even we do not know, or have forgotten or repressed, but that are visible to God, and with which I believe He can deal. My father and mother both having had training in psychiatry, I personally regard hypnotherapy as a valid means by which these underlying thoughts, emotions, and experiences can be surfaced, in order to address problems or life issues that Individuals are undergoing or facing, and to lead them to better mental health. Of course, such therapy also carries with it the potential for abuse (just as is the case with medical doctors who treat physical ailments), so practitioners of hypnotherapy must similarly be held to strict standards, and professionally disciplined or sanctioned for any malpractice in this area.
