We who are parents know that our young people have ways of expressing their uniqueness and opinions. They want to be seen as a valuable individual. A certain amount of assertion is common.
In my opinion, a totally rebellious, hateful, gluttonous and self indulgent young person is a result of early years of being raised 'spoiled' by the parents.
I think I would be speaking for most parents when I say that disciplining our children and seeing them upset and angry at us, isn't an enjoyable thing. Some of us would rather not do it. This verse may have been an incentive for the Old Testament parents to discipline their young children. If they had ever witnessed someone else's young adult being stoned to death, they would want to be certain their children didn't end up in the same matter. They could also use it as a reference point for their children, maybe saying, "I have to discipline you because you must grow up knowing how to control yourself and not be executed such as so and so."
In a way, this verse continues today. Parents who fail to install the respect of authorities (school, parents etc.) and obedience to them in the lives of their children, often must put up with the heartache of watching their youth receive training in discipline from authorities - possibly in jail. (I'm not inferring that all the young people in jail weren't raised properly by their parents)
