What does Romans 7: 8 mean when it says, "For apart from the law sin was dead"?

ESV - 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead.

Romans 7:8 can be rephrase as: The "law"(of sin) requires that you must die (the "second death"), because you're a sinner. But because Christ has paid your debt in accordance with the law, the law have no longer legal demand on you.
