What (if any) examples can we find in the Bible of people who struggled with discerning the voice of God?

If the type of struggle described in the question is indicated by apparent doubt or uncertainty that causes a person to ask for or to be given a sign from God, I can think of several instances in the Bible where people (including even some who would be described as "heroes of faith") wanted or were given additional confirmation as to God's intent, or expressed uncertainty or doubt as to what God was telling them. These would include:

Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 16-18)
Moses (Exodus 4:1-9)
Gideon (Judges 6:11-24)
Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:8-11)
Zechariah (Luke 1:5-23)

Also, passages such as 1 Samuel 3:1 indicate that there were apparently whole periods of time in Israel when God rarely spoke, or prophetic visions were not frequent. It would seem to me that such times could have been marked by uncertainty on the part of people with respect to discerning the voice of God in human affairs.
