Most all legends have a basis in truth, and I don't think this Grail legend is any different. My wife and I are fortunate to live in Cornwall, England and here there is a strong legend that Jesus visited Cornwall, or Kernow as it was called then. I always considered this a very flimsy story given credence by William Blake's 'Jerusalem' anthem, but since moving here I spent some time (not intending to spend much) investigating the legend, which is connected with the grail legend via Joseph of Aramathea. I have to say I was surprised by much of what I found, both in the Bible and local artifacts. There is nowhere close to room to go expanding on this here, but suffice to say that the legend could well be true, there are many facts that are explainable without the Cornish legend. Of course it was Joseph who was supposed to have brought the grail to Britain, and the possibility of him actually coming here does add one more positive to the legend. The idea that the Grail is some form of chalice is erroneous, the base legend states a 'cruet', simply a metal or glass container, into which Joseph collected Christ's blood and sweat, it was sealed, and which became a holy relic, and that's all we really know.
