Your question: Is God's love conditional on us "doing" the right things or "believing" the right things?

If God’s was conditional, then John 3:16 would not be true.

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

God’s love for mankind is unconditional, seeing he so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son and has declared that if any will put their trust in him would be saved.

God gives us a choice either to believe or to reject his Son. This is the condition that God has set forth.

As to doing the right thing or believing the right thing, this has led many astray from following God’s divine plan. 

They have not understood the words that the Father spoke before creating Adam. He said, “Let us create man in our image.”

Let us see how he has done this. Once a person receives Christ, within them is placed the Holy Spirit conforming us to his image. He puts within us the very character of himself. His love. His faith. His trust. His peace. By these are we created into his image.

The apostles only wrote of two commandments that we would possess which would fulfill all the things we should do.

The first is what we have received from the Father. That is to say, believing in his Son.

The second is only made possible through the first. For God puts his love in our hearts that we may walk as God walks. Meaning if you possess his love, you will love your neighbor as yourself.

What does this mean? 
Romans 8:13: “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

These are the things a Christian walks in. These are the beliefs one possesses. 

By these two you are created into the image of God.
