Where is the Dead Sea, and what is it like? The Dead Sea is the saltwater lake, approx. 50 miles long x 10 miles wide, separating Israel from Jordan. Today it's called the Dead Sea b/c fish can't survive there. That's important to know because of Bible prophecy. Ezekiel 47:7-10 Now when I had returned, behold, on the bank of the river there were very many trees on the one side and on the other. Then he said to me, "These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Arabah; then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the sea, and the waters of the sea become fresh. "It will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes.read more. "And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it; from Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the spreading of nets Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many." In Bible days it was called the Salt Sea, the Sea of Arabah, and the Eastern Sea. My source of data says is at least 25% salt (4 times higher than the ocean). If a fish is unfortunate enough to follow the Jordan River's current intio the Dead Sea, it would die almost immediately. I have been there and "swam" in it, actually floated. I had an open cut of sorts, and it stung! I instantly ran to the beachfront shower to take away the sting!
The Dead Sea is the body of water into which the Jordan River empties at its southern end. It is located at earth's lowest elevation on land, being at a point 1,412 feet below sea level. It is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, with a degree of salinity that is 9.6 times higher than that of the ocean, and with a resulting level of buoyancy that makes it very difficult for a person to sink or drown in it. The sea's high salt level makes it impossible for plant and animal life to fourish in it, which led to its name. Its main northern basin is 31 miles long, and nine miles wide at its widest point. Over the last ninety years, the area of the Dead Sea has declined by approximately 176 square miles. Its surface area is currently 234 square miles, with an average depth of 653 feet, and a maximum depth of 978 feet. Multiple projects are currently in progress by the country of Jordan (which borders the Dead Sea on its eastern side) to stabilize the area of the Dead Sea by pumping salt water from the Red Sea, converting it into potable water by desalinating it, and emptying any salinated water byproducts (including removed salt) into the Dead Sea.
