I would say that John 3:16 is so frequently cited because of the concise manner in which it summarizes in one verse the gospel message. It affirms that there is a God. It speaks of God's attitude of love toward humanity, whatever humans' faults or shortcomings. It testifies to the extreme sacrificial lengths to which God was willing to go to assure that humanity would not have to spend eternity separated from Him. and It indicates the ability to avoid that fate not through physical actions (which might result in the exclusion of some people because of their inability to perform those actions), but through faith (that anyone can exercise) in a salvation that Christ has already won for them, and that only He could have accomplished. In summary, it highlights all the elements (faith, hope, and love) that Paul indicated in 1 Corinthians 13:13 are abiding truths, with the emphasis (as Paul stated) placed on love.
I believe that John 3:16 is so popular is because it declares God's Love "For God so loved the world..." “God.” Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 2 Corinthians 5:19-21 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation… This is a message from Heaven John 3:16 Heaven’s Brightest Beam is ‘For God so loved the world’. This is God, Who is light (1 John 1:5), loving here! We love darkness but he came to dispel the darkness. “For God” (the greatest Giver) It is God “who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 2:4 “so loved” (the greatest motive) John is emphasizing, it seems, both the degree to which God loved the world as well as the manner in which He chose to express that love. This is in keeping with John’s style of using double entendre or double meaning. Thus, the focus of the Greek construction here is on the nature of God's love, addressing its mode, intensity, and extent. “the world” (the greatest need), -- “The world represents sinful humanity and is not worthy of God’s saving love. Apart from the love of God, the world stands under God’s condemnation. But in Christ, believers experience God’s surprising, redeeming, and never-ending love. John 3:16 is not about the greatness of the world but about the greatness of God.” -- Dr. John W. Tweeddale, academic dean and professor of theology at Reformation Bible College.
The reason it is so popular is because it is GOD'S word. And God can not lie. For God so loved the world, everybody, that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, that whosoever, anybody, believeth on Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. God made the way of salvation by faith alone in Jesus' finished work on the cross alone apart from any works. Romans 4:5-8. We have to be as righteous as God to go to heaven. No sin can enter heaven so Jesus paid our sin debt in full so we can never be condemned again. He gives us His perfect righteousness at the moment of faith. Believe, trust. Ephesians 1-13 Romans 4:6. All believers have eternal life. John 6:47. First John 5:13. John 6:40 and John 6:29. John 3:18, Romans 11:6 AMAZING GRACE, JESUS PAID IT ALL AND WE PAID 0. IT IS FREE. You can not boast in free. Romans 3:26-28 Ephesians 2:8-9 Faith takes no effort. Faith is not a work. It is faith apart from works. Man can not save himself. Jesus paid the price for us to redeem us from the old law of sin and death.
