What bothers me about tongues is not knowing what your saying. As I read in 2nd Thessalonians chapter 2 we are warned in the last days.

Don't be so easily shaken or alarmed by those who say that the day of the Lord has already begun. Dont believe them, even if they claim to have had a spiritual vision, a revelation, or a letter supposedly from us. Don't be fooled by what they say, for that day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God and the man of lawlessness is revealed.

vs 7 for this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way. Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming. This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use everyking of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.
Will the devil is a copy cat, he deceives by trying to copy Jesus Christ. And that includes speaking in unknown languages, miracles, signs and wonders.

If you pray, and ask God to drench you in the Holy Spirit, He will. As a new Christian, I prayed many times and asked God to bless me with the Holy Spirit, and He did.

How do you know that you have the Holy Spirit? What are the signs? You will know when you have the Holy Spirit in you. Trust me. For me, it is an amazing, indescribable feeling. Your heart is bursting. You feel like you're not really in the world, like you're not inside your body...it's really incredible. Others may not feel the same way as I do, but you WILL know when you have the Holy Spirit. People feel it differently, and the signs are different.
You do not necessarily have to prophecy, speak in tongues, or have visions. Personally, I've had dreams. But you do not have to have any of those to know you have the Holy Spirit in you.

And remember this verse:

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
1 Corinthians 12:3 KJV

It always seems to surprise me that so many people believe that speaking in tongues (glossolalia) is exclusive with Christianity, when earliest record of this goes back to the Zoroastrianism over 900 B.C. which was certainly not Christian. Also many other non Christian religions such as Hinduism, Muslims practice this. Google: glossolalia practiced by Zoroastrians to be enlightened. Also this is listed by Paul as "a" gift, not "the" as in the only gift as evidence of the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Hope I am not in error on this.
