The good suggestion from the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:8 is worth quoting. "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." The apostle Paul also said in 1 Corinthians 2:16 that "we have the mind of Christ" because the Holy Spirit lives in us. As we devote ourselves to being a student of the Holy Spirit he will teach us the truth of God from the Bible and develop the mind of Christ in us. He will change what we think about. He will change how we see our lives and the world around us. He will give us understanding of God's plan and purpose for our lives. He will convert these new thoughts into God-pleasing actions. As we focus our minds on the mission that God has given each of us, we don't need to worry about "controlling" our thoughts. It is only when we keep one foot in the world and one foot in the kingdom of God that we struggle with our thoughts. Whenever we turn our minds away from what this world is offering us and look to Christ for his example and direction, then the Holy Spirit becomes our resident teacher to form the mind of Christ in us. Paul has much to say in 1 Corinthains 2: 6-16 about the wisdom that God reveals by His Spirit, that transforms our whole thought process. Verse 9-10a "However, as it is written: What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit." Let's open our bibles seeking to discover all the things God has prepared for us who love him. Verse 10b-11 "The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God." Let's search the scriptures looking to find God's thoughts for our own individual lives and the Spirit will reveal it to us. Verse 12-13 "What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words." Let's search the bible and discover all the gifts that God has freely given us. And the Spirit will show our minds how to reveal these gifts (spiritual realities) to other people using words that the Spirit has taught us. Verse 15-16 "The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to [limited to] merely human judgments..... but we have the mind of Christ." When we are filled with wonder and awe at all that God has planned for our lives, and we are passionate about fulfilling the mission Christ has given each of us, we won't have any trouble controlling our thoughts because the mind of Christ will be fully formed in us.
