Jesus' description of His yoke as light reflects the following aspects: 1) The weight of our yoke is immeasurably increased by the innate, universal corruption of our natures by sin, which renders us incapable of pleasing God (apart from faith in Christ) -- a burden from which Christ is free -- and from which we can be delivered through faith in Him. There is no greater weight, bondage, or slavery than being captive to our sin, and being unable to free ourselves in any way. 2) Even the means of salvation by works of the Law as commanded by God serves only to condemn us through our inability to keep it perfectly (unlike Christ, who could and did keep it in its entirety). 3) Believers in Christ can perform the "burden" of their obedient actions out of gratitude to Christ for a salvation that He has already won for them, rather than under the burden of necessity or compulsion. 4) Believers further have the inward presence of God the Holy Spirit to aid and guide them, as compared to obedience to the Law through our own efforts, in which no such assistance is provided.
Jesus told the woman at the well, one drink of my living water and you will never thirst again. Where sin abounds, grace much more abounds. Grace is a bottomless well. John 3:18 We can no longer be condemned. The grace of God covers us from all sin. The yoke is the law. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. Romans 3:28. Therefore we conclude a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. Galatians 2:21 I do not void the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Romans 11:6 All grace, no works. Ephesians 2:8-9. For by grace ye are saved, through FAITH, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. When we know we have eternal life, our burden is lifted. First John 5:13. Our sin debt is paid in full and we can no longer be condemned. John 3:18. It is like a great weight is lifted from our shoulders. That Christ died for sinners. He paid the debt and set us free. No longer condemned. John 3:18. The gift of God is eternal life. Though our sins be as scarlet, He washes us white as snow.
