The Bible refers multiple times to an individual who has died as being "gathered to his people" (even prior to burial). To me, this could plausibly be interpreted as describing an after-death experience of encountering others of one's knowledge among the redeemed (especially family members or loved ones) who have previously died. However, I would also want to avoid trying to read too much into the phrase. For Christians (as specifically indicated by Paul in Philippians 1:23), the overriding expectation is being in Christ's presence.
