The cited verse speaks of the "word of God" as being "the sword of the Spirit". The thought that occurs to me is that, unlike an element of armor (which is protective, defensive, and passive), a sword is an offensive weapon that is actively used to counter, and even defeat, an adversary. In that respect, I am reminded of the account of the temptation of Christ (Matthew 4:1-11), in which Jesus responded to each of Satan's allurements (which presented very real tests of His human nature) by quoting from Scripture. This same resource (amplified since the time of Christ by the writings of the New Testament) is available to Christians down to the present day to actively assist in both countering evil spiritual forces directed against themselves, and also in bringing others to saving faith in Christ, and thus subduing the power of the same forces in their lives.
The sword of the Spirit is powerful (Hebrews 4:12, "For the Word of God is living and powerful, sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing"). It is sharp, that is, God's words of judgment, are sharp as swords (Isaiah 49:2; Heb. 4:12) LASB "He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away." (Isaiah 49:2, ESV) Use it in searching your own soul for sin, aspirations to adopt, and for winning souls to Jesus! "We all tend to compare ourselves with others and conclude that we’re doing pretty well: ‘Sure, I get angry, but not like that guy! Yes, I struggle with lust, but I’m not a sex-addict!’ Then we read the Word, which shows us God’s holy standard. It’s like when I’m working out in the yard and I know that I have some dirt on my face, but I don’t know how bad it is. Then I look in the mirror and it shows me how dirty I really am! God’s Word holds the mirror of His holy standard to our dirty lives. It shows me where I need to clean up." Cole
Ephesians 6:7-11 talks about the full armor of God. That armor, which is designed to be used in spiritual warfare and witnessing, consists of six pieces: 1) helmet of salvation, 2) belt of truth, 3) feet shod with the gospel of peace, 4) breastplate of righteousness, 5) sword of the spirit and 6) shield of faith. A properly covered Christian, ready for battle, would then be able to fight against the enemy (Satan and his minions) as well as to spread the Gospel. The sword of the spirit (God’s Word) was used by our Lord Jesus in the wilderness to overcome the difficult temptations of the devil, who counteracted with misquoted scriptures of his own. That’s why it is CRITICALLY important that Christians memorize the Word of God, so that they can stand, fight and win their battles in the realm of the spiritual world.
