A 29-year-old Chicago police officer had over 5 years on the job before she took her own life in August 2022. She worked in Englewood, one of the toughest and most infamous neighborhoods in Chicago. This is a district so difficult and violent that many officers have attributed it to a 1-to-4-year differential. Every year you work in the 7th District, they say, is equivalent to 4 years in another district. She was active, talented, educated, and loved. This officer had a young child, who is now left without a mother. I cannot imagine the heartbreak felt by the family, and by that little boy. Sadly, the Chicago Police Department lost another 2 officers to suicide weeks after Officer 11337 took her own life. What does the Bible say that can help? https://www.cordico.com/2022/08/03/cops-are-people-too/

John 16:33: These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. There may be a variety of reasons someone contemplates suicide. They may have money problems, marital / relationship problems, emotional problems, etc. However, police officers are often in a circumstance where seeking help is seen as weakness. They need a source of hope. Hebrews 13:5: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Suicide is prevalent among police officers. There are groups that focus on helping officers deal with life (I have heard there are several that have started relatively recently with a focus on officers and their particular problems), normally staffed by people who either are or have been officers, so they can relate to their situations. If you know an officer in this situation, seek out sources of help for them; but without a relationship to Christ, these other things could help them deal with life now, but still live an eternity separated from God.
