As I see it, the "gods" mentioned in the cted passage could either be idols, exalted spiritual beings (such as angels), or even those individuals whom humans honor as most distinguished among themselves (such as those humans of whom Jesus was speaking in John 10:34-38). In all of those cases, by singing the praises of the one true God of Israel in their presence, David is proclaiming that He is greater than any of them.
