The woman with whom Jesus was speaking was a Samaritan, and thus not a Jew. She would have known that Jesus was a Galilean (and therefore a Jew) by His speech. (Verses such as Mark 14:70 and Luke 22:59 indicate the ability of people to recognize inhabitants of Galilee by the distinctive dialect or accent of their speech.) (Jews ordinarily avoided dealings with Samaritans, whom they considered as having abandoned Israel and corrupted Judaism after the death of Solomon in the Old Testament. However, Jesus indicated by His actions (through the conversion of many in the woman's village) and words (such as His parable of the good Samaritan) that God's mercy extended to them also.)

John 4:9: Then saith the woman of Sa-ma’-ri-a unto him, “How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Sa-ma’-ri-a?” for the Jews have no dealing with the Sa-mar’-i-tans.

Lord Jesus and His disciples were in Judea (John 3:22) and then were going back again to Galilee; (John 4:3) Samaria was between these two provinces and Lord Jesus needed to go through Samaria, but the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans as they knew not whom they worshiped but were waiting for the Messiah to come. (John 4:22,25) Heavenly Father opened her heart to reveal that it was a Jew that asked for water, just as the woman Lydia a seller of purple from Macedonia attended unto the things which were spoken by Paul, whose heart then the Lord opened, and she and her family were baptized. (Acts 16:14-15)

Lord Jesus needed to go through Samaria, “for the meat to eat that ye know not off” (John 4:32) who was being led by the Heavenly Father came and then set by the well, and then a woman came to the well and Jesus said unto her, “Give me to drink.” Hearing the Lord’s voice brought joy to her for she came to the well to draw water, just as Rebekah who came to the well and Abraham’s servant asked for water for him, and his camels and she fed them all. (Gen 24:17-20) The Lord God is the one who reveals to mankind just as Abraham’s servant prayed and was blessed. (Gen 24:14)

The Samaritans being brought by the king of Assyria from different lands, worshiped other gods made of idols, for they did not know the rituals of the God of the land. Lord sent Lions among them which slew some of them, the king was then told, and he sent priests to dwell there and teach them the manner of God of the land to be worshiped. (2 Kings 17:24-33)

It is the Heavenly Father who reveals to us the “meat to eat off” for our repentance, and it is our humbleness that leads us with joy to draw water out of the wells of salvation. (Isa 12:3) The Samaritan woman hearkening to the voice of the Lord God in humbleness and humility was aware of the Messiah who would come called Christ who would tell all things, and she was told about her husbands, which then led her to know He was the Messiah who revealed her sinful nature. (John 4:18,26) When she went back to the city, she revealed to men, and many of the Samaritans believed in Him and came to Him and asked Him to stay with them, they heard His word for then they knew “that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” For this was the meat that he came to eat that his disciples knew not off.

John 4:32: But he said unto them, "I have meat to eat that ye know not of."
