In this passage of Scripture concerning the leaven of the Pharisees, I would like to share that Jesus was also dealing with their hypocrisy. In the preceding verses 1-5, the Pharisees and the Sadducees came with false pretenses by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven, but their motive was to tempt Him! Jesus used this situation to teach His disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees, which He explained to them that He was referring to their doctrine. The Pharisees had a form of godliness (outward appearance) and lived by the traditions of the elders which made the word of God of no effect in their lives; they deemed themselves righteous according to the law of Moses, but Jesus knew the wickedness of their hearts. See also, Mark 8:15-21 and Luke 12:1-3.
