Jesus makes the claim that he is the cornerstone from Psalm 118. The stone is a familiar image for God (Deuteronomy 32:4, Psalm 18:31, Isaiah 17:10, 26:4) and particularly in how it points to the Messiah (Isaiah 28:16, Daniel 2:34-35,45, Acts 4:11, Ephesians 2:20). Jesus made it clear to the Jewish leaders (the builders) that they had rejected him, and he had become to them a stone of stumbling (Isaiah 8:14).

The cornerstone is laid first at the head corner and governs every other corner and every angle in the entire building and thus determines the place every other stone is to be laid. Through his death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus became the chief cornerstone of the spiritual temple, the church.

Psalm 118:22: The stone which the builders refused is become the headstone of the corner.

The builders were the elders of Israel, to whom the Lord spoke through Moses and Aaron. The Lord had seen their affliction and heard their cry by the reasons of their taskmasters. (Exo 3:8,16/4:29) These builders, along with their families, were brought out of Egypt by a pillar of a cloud by day and by a pillar of fire by night. (Exo 13:21) For this was the Headstone of the corner which led them out of Egypt to the promised land for He was to, “Lay there for their sure foundation in Zion.” (Isa 28:16) This Spiritual Rock that followed them was our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior, a Stone for their foundation for the builders who were led and brought out of Egypt. (1 Cor 10:4)

These builders as they journeyed out, they chided with Moses, for he then cried out unto the Lord, "What shall I do unto this people?" For they were almost ready to stone him. For then the Headstone of the corner, the Rock stood upon a rock in Horeb, and Moses was told to smite the rock below and the water flowed out. (Exo 17:2-6) When they moved on into the desert of Zin, they had no water to drink and they cried out again, Moses was then told to “speak to the Rock” and it shall give forth His water. Moses disobeyed and struck the Rock, yet the Lord flowed water, and they all drank the spiritual drink of the Rock that followed them. (Num 20:8-11)

Today we have many teachers eager to please others with itching ears to please those who were called, and are the builders today. For these builders do not endure sound doctrine but after their own lust, they heap to themselves these teachers, having itching ears. (2 Tim 4:3) Today these builders walk in their wisdom, for name and fame, and reject the same Stone who stands before them. These builders today are blinded in their eyes and have hardened their hearts that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their hearts and be converted and be healed by Him. (John 12:40) The Rock being our shield we need to abide by the Rock for then He shall abide in you. (John 15:4)

Isaiah 28:16: Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
