In the Old Testament book of Leviticus, go to chapter 9:24 - 10:3. We read about Nadab and Abihu and the profane fire. Why was the fire profane? Because God had commands concerning the fire, and the censors used for it. God is God! He gives specific instructions at times and He expects them to be followed. Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:18 we read about Holy, Holy, Holy God. He is the powerful, awesome creator of the world. When He speaks we are to listen and obey.
I would say that the prohibitions outlined here not only marked the reverence due to holy things, but the mystery of the things signified by those types, and the darkness of the dispensation (that is, of the Law, before the coming of Christ), which contrasted the holiness of God, and of the accoutrements associated with His due reverence, compared to the sinfulness of humanity. Now, however, through Christ, the case is altered, and we are encouraged to come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).
