I would say that Noah (and, by extension, his family) found grace with God, not through any specific action or works that they performed, but through being the only humans at that time who maintained faith in God and worshipped Him because of the promises that He had previously made to their ancestors. (Noah demonstrated that faith when he built the ark at God's command, but his faith came first.)
Just like anyone else, we can't do anything to earn the grace and forgiveness of God. Noah followed the plans laid before him through the sovereign influence of the Holy Spirit. He did as he was told and found grace as a by-product of that obedience. Noah was perfect in all his generations because he kept himself and his family pure from the pollution of the Nephilim and it was counted as righteousness.
