Dear Anonymous, in the context of this verse, the Greek meaning of the word "abide" is meno, which means "to remain, stay, or continue." It speaks of our permanent union with God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. It is the same word that is used in John chapter 15, where Jesus teaches His disciples about the relationship between the True Vine and the branches. He is the True Vine and we are the branches. Jesus is the Source of eternal life, and we live because we are connected to Him.

What Does "Abide in Him" Mean in the Context of 1 John 2:6? 1 John 1:2-6 says "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked." (NKJV). To abide in Christ is to walk in submission to His teachings and commands and in fellowship with His Spirit. This is how the word of God influences and shapes our worldview. John labels the disobedient believer as a liar in whom the truth of God's word does not dwell. The obedient believer however keeps God's word and abides in Christ. The significance of God's word on the life of the believer is outlined in several texts and passages of Scripture. Psalm 119 is perhaps one of the most explicit passages of Scripture that celebrate the divine influence of God's word on the life of the believer. Psalm 119:105 says "Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path." (NKJV). The psalmist proclaims that the word of God guides his path in life. To abide in Christ is to discern His leading through the pages of Scripture and to apply these truths to the circumstances of our practical Christian living. A believer who walks with Christ in truth will discern His will for his life in practically every circumstance and draw inspiration and direction from God's holy word. Scripture conveys the mind of God to all covenant people in every human civilization. The voice of Christ is indelibly encrypted in Scripture. He is our final prophet (Hebrews 1:1-2). The more we spend time studying the word of God in Scripture, the more we are deepened in the knowledge of Christ and are better able to navigate the terrains of life. We should therefore allow the Scriptures to illuminate our paths of life and in this way we shall securely abide in Christ in this world and in the life to come.

1 John 2:6: He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. The scriptures reveal unto us from the time of Abram, who abided with the Lord God, he also walked with God the Father. The Lord who appeared unto him led him to depart from Haran, to go to the land of Canaan. He and his brother’s son Lot, then went through the land unto a place of Si’-chem in the plain of Mo’-reh, and the Lord then said unto him, “Unto thy seed will I give this land,” and there he built an altar unto the Lord who appeared unto him. The herdsmen of Abram’s and Lot’s cattle had a strife, and he then told Lot to separate thyself from him. Lot went to the plains of Jordan, and Abram went to the plains of Mam’-re, in He’-bron. (Gen 12:1,4,7,13:7-12,18/John 8:56) The Lord Almighty God then told Abram, “Thy name shall be Abraham. “Walk before Me, and be thou perfect, for I will establish My covenant between Me and thee,” and the Lord God then went up from Abraham. (Gen 17:1-2,5,22) The Lord then appeared unto Abraham in the plains of Mam’-re, when he lifted his eyes, he saw three men that stood by him, he fed them, and then walked with them, with wisdom and understanding given unto him. (Gen 18:1-2,8,16,33) Abraham was told by the Lord, who appeared unto him, “I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life.” For then Abraham rejoiced to see “His day,” for he saw it, and was glad, for before Abraham was, “I am,” that is our Lord Jesus, who was and who is today, “for the time of life,” that everyone needs to abide in Him, and to walk with Him. For many who have passed away, and today who shall have great faith, who came and who shall come from the east and west, shall sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. (Gen 18:10,14/John 8:56,58/Mat 8:11) Today, one who is led to abide in Him needs to discern in the right spirit, knowing that the Lord Jesus is the light of the world. For those who then follow Him, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have a light of life given unto them. (Joh 8:12) The light of life given to one, to walk as He walked, Lord Jesus ascended first into the lower parts of the earth, and the graves were opened. Many of the saints who had slept arose, and came out of the graves after His resurrection, who then walked in the light of the day and went into the city and appeared unto many. (Eph 4:9/Mat 27:52-53) Today, whoever abides in Him will be led to walk with Him, who is born of water (for repentance) and of the Holy Spirit that leads you to enter into the kingdom of God. One who is born of water (baptism) for repentance says that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and make Him a liar, for then His Word is not in you. If one walks in the light of wisdom given to you as He is in the light, we shall have fellowship with one another, confessing our sins. For Lord Jesus then is faithful and is just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, for the cry of the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sins. (1 John 1:6-10) Marvel not that He said, "Ye must be born again," for out of your belly, shall then flow rivers of living water, led by the Holy Spirit to enter into the kingdom of God. For the Holy Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered, for God the Father that searches our hearts knows what is in the mind of the Spirit that maketh intercession for us. One who is then born of water for repentance shall walk in the light, for He is in the light who leads us to fellowship, one with another in humbleness, of repentance. (John 3:3,5,7/7:38/Rom 8:26-27) 1 John 2:15-16: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
