How does a person get their name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?

Revelation 21:27 says "But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life." (NKJV). 

Now to answer your question...

A person gets their name written in the Book of Life by repenting of sin and believing in Jesus Christ as their personal savior. John 3:16-17 says "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

Once a sinner turns to Christ, his sins are immediately forgiven and he is transformed from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. He is counted among God's covenant people and is numbered as a member of God's household of faith (John 1:12; Galatians 6:10). 

The final record of the Lamb's Book of Life will contain a list of all believers who will have turned to Christ from Calvary and until His coming. Their names will not be erased from the Book of Life no matter what suffering they undergo in this passing evil world. 

Believers have been sealed with the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption (Ephesians 4:30). God is faithful to honor His promises in Scripture (Numbers 23:19). His promise of the coming of Christ and the rapture of the church to heaven will be fulfilled at His appointed time. 

In Revelation 20:15, the Bible says "Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before [c]God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." (NKJV).

Scripture never gives a formula saying that a person performs certain acts and then has his name added to the Lamb’s Book of Life. Rather, the book belongs to the Lamb, and those found written in it belong to Him and receive life instead of the second death (Rev 20:15; 21:27).

A person is saved today by God's grace through having faith in Christ, the gospel: that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Cor 15:1–4). Salvation is “not of works”. Therefore, water baptism, religious works, moral reform, or “repenting of sins” cannot earn a place in God’s record, as these would all be acts "of ourselves" (Eph 2:8-9), but salvation is "that not of yourselves". The believer has faith alone in Christ for salvation, and trusts what Christ accomplished on his behalf.

Upon believing, the sinner is justified, imputed (gifted) the righteousness of God Himself, placed in Christ, and sealed with the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption (Rom 4:5 - 4:24; Eph 1:13–14; 4:30). Therefore, the believer’s assurance rests in Christ, not on how well we "turn from sin", "follow Christ", "pray for forgiveness", etc. The world's sins were forgiven at the cross (2 Cor 5:19) and we believe unto salvation.

Scripture does not plainly state that a name is first written at the moment of conversion. It speaks of names being “written in heaven” and even associates the book with God’s purpose from the foundation of the world (Luke 10:20; Rev 13:8; 17:8). Paul also spoke of fellow laborers “whose names are in the book of life” (Phil 4:3).

Concerning infants or others incapable of believing, Scripture does not explain the exact operation of the book. We can trust that the Judge of all the earth will do what He sees as "right", and we will fully understand His righteous judgement one day. 

Scripture does reveal clearly that conscious sinners are not saved by their works, but only through faith in the righteousness and finished work of Jesus Christ...for us.
