Scriptural Explanation of These Principles

External Religious Rules and Rituals

Paul says we were "in bondage under the elements of the world" (Galatians 4:3). These "elements" refer to basic religious practices—human‑centered systems that rely on ceremonies, regulations, and outward performance rather than faith in Christ. 

Elementary Teachings That Cannot Change the Heart

The word stoicheia ("elements") points to rudimentary teachings—the spiritual ABCs of earthly religion. They are simple, external, and unable to produce true righteousness. 

Systems That Keep People Spiritually Immature

Paul compares life under these principles to being a child under guardians (Galatians 4:1–3). These systems keep people in spiritual infancy, unable to experience the freedom and maturity that come through Christ. 

Human Traditions and Worldly Patterns

These principles include the ways of the world—patterns of thinking and living shaped by human tradition rather than God's Spirit. They are earthly, external, and ultimately enslaving. 

The basic spiritual principles of this world are the elementary, outward, and powerless religious and worldly systems that kept people in spiritual bondage before Christ (Galatians 4:3).

Christ Redeems Us From Bondage to External Religion

Paul says we were once "in bondage under the elements of the world" (Galatians 4:3).

These elements were outward rules, rituals, and human‑centered systems that could never make a person righteous.

But Christ came "to redeem those who were under the law" (Galatians 4:5).

Redemption means He bought us out of that slavery.

We no longer live under powerless religious systems—Christ sets us free from anything that tries to replace Him.

Christ Gives Us the Spirit Who Breaks Every Old Bondage

Galatians 4:6 says,

"God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."

The Spirit inside us replaces the old external principles.

He produces inward transformation, not outward performance.

He empowers obedience from love, not fear.

He makes us cry "Abba"—a sign of intimacy that no worldly system can produce.

Christ frees us from a life shaped by strict rules and empty rituals by bringing us into a genuine relationship with God. 

Through Jesus, we become God's children, and His Spirit begins to shape our hearts from the inside. 

We no longer live under fear, pressure, or the old patterns that once controlled us. The Spirit helps us grow, guides our decisions, and gives us strength to live differently. 

This new freedom allows us to walk with God each day, confident in His love, supported by His presence, and led step by step into a life that reflects Him.

These principles rely on human effort, rituals, and traditions rather than the transforming work of God. 

Understanding this helps believers recognise the difference between worldly spirituality that enslaves and the gospel that brings genuine life and maturity.
