Paul is telling the Colossians to put on the new man who is created in the image and likeness of Jesus Christ.

As born again believers we are to put on the virtues or characteristics of Christ. These virtues are produced by the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23, reveals them as the fruit of the Spirit. As we yield to the Holy Spirit we will bear the fruit that are mentioned in Colossians and Galatians.
