Why do they call themselves "Latter Day Saints?" To me, it's a catchy title. Sometimes that's reason enough. Beyond that, I have no idea...

Hey! I am actually a Latter-Day saint (Or a Mormon)! We actually just call ourselves "Latter-day-saints" purely because it is the last name of the LDS church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.) I hope this helped!

It doesn't help me any, I ain't sure about anyone else. I understand the concept of something or someone being called by a specific name, but when the question is WHY THAT name, I need more than what is offered here. For instance, if someone asked me why I call myself Danny, I can honestly say, 'It's the name I was given at birth (here it is) by my grandmother.' (Actually it was Michael for a few days, before she decided she preferred Danny, according to family legend).
Someone came up with the name 'Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.' I think the question is WHO came up with that title and WHY that name.
I don't blame anyone for feeling a bit slighted by the asking. No reason or embellishment, no frills or trimmings, just a dry, 'Why do you guys call yourselves that'? (believe me, I get it). I wish I had a dime for every time I've entertained the question, "Why do you call yourself an African American; why not just an American?"
It ain't because of what I said about "a catchy title" for the LDS. it's to establish an identity that my community can build upon. (the labels that preceded the current one were created by our oppressors; that ain't right).
Again, LDS is catchy to me. Other than that, I ain't got a clue of where it began and why. "Or a Mormon," doesn't exactly clear it up. IMO, I don't think it has any meaning that affects anything of eternal value.
All those previous labels branded onto my community won't keep us from where God is taking us!!
