First, it is important to point out that "so many" is not an accurate characterization. It may seem like many evangelical Christian leaders are caught in scandals, but this is due to the vast amoun...

I would like to liken them to foot soldiers at the forefront of the spiritual battle between God and satan. Therefore the devil does overtime to bring them down. The sad part of this is that quite a lot of them make themselves vulnerable to attacks by not putting on the full armor of God that protects them against the devil's overtime attacks. It should be noted also that not all the evangelical leaders are true followers of Christ as the devil can masquerade as an angel of light to deceive the world. (2Cor 11:14) Also By their works you shall know them.
I believe that there's nothing wrong with those people, they are just human like you and I are. Its true that there are certain behaviors that some of these men and women do that the church should correct for, but in the end of the day, we are all human beings that have sinned and fallen from the glory of God. They are just "the face of the church" that many look up to and if there's an issue, then God and the church can take the appropriate measures necessary to correct the issue and ensure that it doesn't happen again. But remember, we are all humans and each one of us makes mistakes sometimes.
In addition to the three main points D. Michael Houdmann mentioned, I believe another one needs to be listed: Scandals that are based on false accusations. Case in point: Tony Alamo under the Lord's direction, together with his now-deceased wife Susan, had built a multi-million dollar complex, with several outreaches both nationally and internationally. Thousands of druggies and street-people were saved. But he made a very serious "mistake"... In his preaching and writings he came against a very influential religious/ political group, an international power that no one comes against without serious repercussions. (This group, incidentally, has an iron grip on many, if not all, of our governmental agencies.) Tony was first accused of, and imprisoned for, tax evasion. Government agents confiscated the books and the courts ruled that he had failed to pay wages or deduct taxes on the thousands of volunteers who worked in the ministry, even though they were given housing, meals, clothing, cars, and their children were being provided schooling. Eventually a higher court ruled that Alamo was innocent of all tax charges, but not before the facilities had been shut down and confiscated for "back taxes," with hundreds of families being left homeless. But that was just the beginning. Because Tony Alamo didn't learn his lesson and continued exposing corruption in high places, he was then accused of child molestation and given a 175-year sentence, which he is still serving. Did I mention that he has been legally blind for many years? In time, some of the witnesses, whom the prosecutors had used to put Tony behind bars, came forward and admitted they had perjured themselves. One girl who had witnessed against him was known by all her acquaintances, including her parents, to be a psychopathic liar. Another admitted to having been paid $10,000 to bear false witness, plus being threatened that harm would come to her family if she refused. A former member of his church, who had been disciplined for throwing acid in someone's face, had also brought false accusations against him. Even though these witnesses have been discredited, Tony is still behind bars, confined to a wheelchair, with deteriorating health, and no chance of parole or release -- except for divine intervention. But Tony doesn't complain. He considers himself exceedingly blessed, having been counted worthy to be "persecuted for righteousness sake." I have in my congregation a couple who attend frequently, who knew him well. In fact, Skip was his personal driver for many years. He and his wife Terry vouch for Tony's innocence and integrity, and ask for prayers on his behalf. Paul and Silas were arrested, beaten and jailed on false charges. Peter was thrown into prison for insisting on preaching Jesus. They rejoiced! Tony rejoices! He doesn't have a "persecution complex"; he'd rather be free, of course, but he humbly recognizes that the Lord has honored him and counted him worthy to bear this cross for as long a God wills. Please pray for Tony.
The reason that a lot of evangelical Christians are caught in scandals is because they are human and are subject to mistakes and temptations. The only human that was perfect was Jesus Christ and we know that He is God Incarnate. The one thing we all learn by our mistakes and errors and temptations is to learn from them, put safeguards to guard against them and trust in God and His Word, to not repeat those mistakes. "Trust in the Lord with all your Heart, do not lend on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6)."
