Good question! There is some debate about this question, even after all of the years that have passed since the Bible was canonized. Although the book of Genesis describes the very beginning moments of Creation, some Bible scholars argue that it wasn't actually written first. It is widely accepted that the book of Job was written first, although other scholars believe that the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament, were written first.

It's interesting to read the Bible in chronological order, which gives the reader a clearer sense of being in touch with ancient history as you see how biblical events unfolded through time. The chronological order doesn't necessarily shed light on exactly when the books were written; rather, it provides an accounting of the order in which biblical events occurred.

What is the oldest book in the Bible?

The Book of Job is generally considered the oldest book in the Bible, based on both tradition and its internal evidence. While Genesis describes the earliest events, it was likely recorded later by Moses, whereas Job describes a patriarchal, pre-Mosaic era (likely between 1900 and 1700 B.C.)

Why Job is Considered the Oldest Book:

Patriarchal Setting: The book describes a time before the Mosaic Law, the temple, or the formal priesthood. Job himself acts as a priest, offering sacrifices for his family, which is consistent with the era of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Job is written in an archaic form of Hebrew, with several word forms not found in later books of the Bible.

Content Differences: The book does not refer to the Covenant, the Ten Commandments, or the Israelites themselves.

Then we have other Perspectives on the "Oldest" Book:

Genesis/Pentateuch: Some argue that, while Job depicts an earlier period, the Pentateuch (Genesis–Deuteronomy) is the oldest written text because it was compiled by Moses, even though it covers events after Job's time.

Prophetic Texts: From a modern academic standpoint, some researchers suggest that prophetic books, such as Amos or early parts of Isaiah, are the earliest, dating to the 8th century BCE.

Individual Fragments: Some scholars argue that certain poetic sections, such as the "Song of Deborah" (Judges 5), are the oldest written fragments, predating any full book.

However, Genesis certainly contains the oldest information, and the message of Genesis came from Moses, who was the first prophet to have his words formalised in written Scripture, so it would probably be accurate to see Genesis, or perhaps the Pentateuch as a unit, to be the oldest book of the Bible.
