The Nicene Creed and the Apostles Creed are declarations of faith - these are not prayers. "Credo", the root word of "creed", is Latin for "I believe", interestingly the first lines of the texts. By saying "I believe" such and such, one declares his faith. There was a time when professing the creed was dangerous, and would mean death. Before the Romans stopped persecuting Christians, professing "I believe in one God" is subversive, as the Romans believe in the pantheon of gods. Also around 40 AD, Nero Caesar declared himself a god. As a Christian who profess that there is only one God, this would spell martyrdom for himself.
