How is Jesus the seed of Abraham? Jesus is called the seed of Abraham in both a genealogical and a theological sense. Genealogical: Jesus is a real, biological descendant of Abraham. Matthew 1:1 identifies Him as "the son of David, the son of Abraham," and the genealogy traces His line through Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. Luke 3 provides a second historical record confirming His ancestry within the nation of Israel and the tribe of Judah. This fulfils God's promise that Abraham's physical lineage would carry His covenant forward. Theological: God told Abraham: "In your seed all nations of the earth shall be blessed" (Genesis 22:18). Paul explains in Galatians 3:16 that this promise ultimately pointed to one specific descendant—Christ. Jesus is the seed through whom God brings salvation to all nations, fulfilling the covenant by: Bringing the blessing of salvation to the world Forming a new family defined by faith (Galatians 3:7–9) Opening the way for Gentiles to be "grafted in" to Abraham's family (Romans 11) Spiritual: Paul concludes: "If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:29).
