Davids soul and spirit is with Jesus and his body is in the grave waiting for the resurrection
Asleep awaiting the final trumpet.
What then, do we do with the thief on he cross, that Jesus told
"This day you shall be with me in Paradise!"
Paradise is the place where all believing souls go when the body dies.
The spirit goes back to the father from whence it came.
The body goes to the grave.
The reuniting of the soul, body and spirit happen at the resurrection of all the "righteous" dead when Thessalonians 4:17 occurs.
(see Rev 2:7 Paradise of God) (See Luke 23:42 &43 for thief on the cross)
Heb 4:12 - "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any to edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

I agree Dan. Absence with the body is presence with the Lord.
Much as I also agree with DAN, I need a back up scripture that confirms that the soul goes to paradise at death.
WHERE IS KING DAVID NOW?
by Dan Shown
King David is n Paradise with Jesus and all the other righteous dead.
We know that the bible says in Genesis 3:19 the body will return to the dust from whence we were made.
The bible also tells us that when we die our spirits go back to the father from whence it came... Ecc 12:1-8 and in Lk 23:46
the soul, the third part of our being created when the Spirit of God entered Adam (breathed the breath of life into him and he became a living soul) is all that remains to go with Jesus to paradise (means garden) as in Lk 23:43.
Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper that any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of the soul and spirit and the of joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Jesus did not go to heaven on Friday when He died. He slept in the grave till resurrection morning.
John 20.17 states: Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to a my God and your God.'"
The criminal on the cross could not be with Jesus that day, in paradise as Jesus Himself was not in heaven that day when He died. Jesus assured him that he will be with Him in paradise, that is after the criminal is resurrected. John 14: 1-3 clearly states that Jesus said that He will come back and take all that is in Christ to heaven to be with Him, David included who rests in the grave waiting for the resurrection day.
