Jesus said, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me." He said this because at that moment the sins of the entire world was placed on Jesus, and sin separates man (even Jesus) from God. Remember, Jesus had to die for the sins of the whole world because death was God only payment for sin. Jesus paid a debt He did not own, and we owed a debt that we could not pay. God required a perfect sacrifice as payment of sins, and none of us are perfect enough to be that sacrifice. Jesus was made sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God, IN HIM! - PRAISE GOD ! He took our sins and freely gave us His righteousness - it's a gift of God and not of works - lest any one should boast. We could never be good enough to earn righteousness and right standing with a Holy God. It's all about Jesus, our Lord. Jesus did it all, and all to Him we owe. Sin had left a guilty stain, He washed it white as snow - Praise God forever more.

This is humanly incomprehensible. God has not fully revealed to us every aspect of his nature including the areas where we have hard questions. My view is that what is revealed is sufficient for us to place our trust in him and we should be grateful for this fact. We leave the rest to his higher purposes and ways which are far above ours. Even removal of sin from a deserving lot like us is equally incomprehensible to us. Paul speaks of the mystery of the faith, suggesting that certain aspects of our faith may not be fully unwrapped to us but this does not impair our obedience to God

Could Jesus have been quoting Psalm 22 to bring scripture to remembrance from the cross so lovingly?

Psalm22 was prophetic of the crucifixion, a song to the chief musician, to be sung in the melody of "the deer of the dawn." In the new testament, Mathew 27:46, Jesus reminds those who knew the song from the old testament that the song was about him and how he would die. At that moment those who knew the song would have realized the Messiah was being crucified, because the song spoke of him. Some say different but I think this makes perfect sense. Why would Jesus be asking the father why he had forsaken him? He knew why he was going to the cross in his foreknowledge; that wouldn't be a proper question.

When Jesus died on the cross He took the sins of the whole world, so that any on who would believe He did it for them could be saved. First John 2:2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world.
Can you imagine as the perfect Son of God paying for the likes of Hitler? And not just His but every person in the world. If He had not payed for all sin, no one could be saved because we are all sinners to a degree. Romans 3:23 All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.
There is not a righteous person ever born on this world who has lived without sin.
When Jesus cried out to God it was because God had to turn His back on His own son for that moment in time when Jesus paid it all. But then in victory He said the most wonderful words a sinner could ever hear. "It is finished." That is an accounting term meaning paid in full.
When we trust Jesus as our savior, He paid for all our sins forever. We can never be condemned again. John 3:18.
We were all destined for hell. We deserve to go to hell. But Jesus, Just because He loved us so much, made a way for anyone to be saved just by believing on His name.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on His name.
First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.

I realize I kind of got off track here. But we just can not understand how God could love us sinners so much that He would die rather than live without us. What a savior we have. And He gives it to us as a free gift. John 10:28-29.Once we believe no one can pluck us from His hand. He has us like a father hold his little sons hand when crossing a busy street. Hebrews 13:5 He will neve leave us or forsake us. John 6:37 He will never cast us out. John 6:39 Jesus has never lost one. And Jesus can not lie. John 6:47
