We're Missionary Baptists and, in most cases, you won't find any radically different doctrines in the Missionary Baptist Church than you'd find in a (conservative) Southern Baptist Church. In many cases, I think, it has to do with the association to which the church belongs and the manner of sending out missionaries.

Still, this question isn't as easy as it may first appear. There's a REALLY GOOD article about the different Missionary Baptist Associations, their relationship to the SBC, and also a little about the innumerable "independent" Baptist churches at this link. Http://en.allexperts.com/q/Baptists-954/Southern-Baptist-vs-Missionary.htm This author really sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and he goes into detail.

If you're looking at joining a specific Baptist church of ANY type, you need to talk to the pastor. In one town there can be VERY liberal "Baptist" churches as well as VERY conservative Baptist churches. Some will tend to be more old-time Calvinistic Baptist and others staunchly Free Will Baptist. Unfortunately, there are even some out-and-out cults and heretical groups that take the name "Baptist." Even the "Cowboy Churches" and some churches that don't have Baptist in the name are technically Baptist in doctrine and affiliation.

I hope this helps.
