Like Mr.Heck said this story represents Joseph being head of the 12 tribes of Israel, but the symbolism goes even deeper. Joseph is an archetype that represents Christ and the coat of many colors represent the covering of the Holy Spirit. The many colors represent the various aspects of the spirit, the complete fullness of the Holy Spirit. Although the father loves all of his children, Christ is the only begotten son and yes, favorite.
