It is being worked on by "top men". But seriously, it is lost. I believe God took it away lest it become an idol people bow down to. Didn't the cross render it just a plain golden box?
We better be more concerned about the new covenant God by grace gave to us.
The Ark of the Covenant is not lost. The Ark has been found! John the Evangelist wrote that the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the Ark of the Covenant. c.f Revelations 11:19.
If you read Revelation 11:19 (KJV).. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. It seems to indicate its in heaven, in the presence of god!
I saw a show on history about these Ethiopians that claim they guard it in their secret temple. The guy on the show had cataract on his eyes and says everyone who guards the ark dies from cataract they get from looking at it. Who knows....
The ark has been found. One man was given where it was under a lot of earth. He dug it up and it is now in the Israel archives in the land. They have found many things along with the menorah. You can find it on you tube if you type in ark of the covenant. Quite a story how this man found it. The temple is going to be rebuilt over the next 3 years or so.
In ancient times it was widely believed a perfect (or nearly perfect) copy of something would participate in the qualities of the object copied. This belief persists even today under the term "sympathetic magic." I believe Solomon ordered at least one copy of the Ark for his son by the Queen of Sheba to aid in converting those people to Judaism. This is the copy now located in Ethiopia. Other locations may have also possessed a copy, such as the Jewish temple at Elephantine Island on the Nile, where animal sacrifices were performed. The Ark supposedly found by Ron Wyatt would be a copy (or a copy of a copy) used for the Second Temple and hidden away to prevent the Romans from capturing it. The Ark seen by John (Rev 11:19) is the original pattern revealed to Moses; it was seen to indicate that the Jewish religion would be still valid despite the overwhelming numbers of Jews deceived by the Antichrist. I personally believe the account of Jeremiah hiding the Ark at Mount Nebo is most authoritative since the true Ark involves the conditions for the Jews residing in the Holy Land - not elsewhere. The true Ark has no real meaning outside the Holy Land, or for that matter, the pillar stone of Jacob at Bethel. As such, we will not be seeing the true Ark until after Christ's second coming.
