What is the difference between hades and the lake of fire?

Is there a temporary place once we die, until the final judgement? Is there a middle place for unbelievers while believers automatically go to heaven, or is there another waiting place, before heaven/firey hell? 

Luke 16:19 - 31

ESV - ¹⁹ There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. ²⁰ And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores.
