How can I stop saying the wrong things to people?

I know Jesus lives in me and my life has really turned around since I gave my life to Him. Why then am I still so bent on saying the wrong things?

I have had vast experience in this area David. I pray each day and ask God to give me His wisdom and His understanding. I can honestly say the Lord has been faithful. Without God we can do nothing. Nothing.

The believer in Christ receives the very nature of God (2 Peter 1:4), which includes the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). By relying on the Holy Spirit’s indwelling power, the believer can reject foolishness. His thoughts can please the Lord, and he can make decisions that glorify God as he enriches his life and the lives of those around him (Philippians 4:8–9; Ephesians 5:18—6:4).

Trust in the Lord for His will for you is good!

I have been a Christian for forty years and I still hear myself, at times, saying something that as soon as I have said it, I have an uncomfortable feeling that, perhaps, I could have said it better or I didn't mean exactly that or "why did I say that?".

What I have learned is that if I ask the Lord to guide my path as He has promised to do, and I ask Him to let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart give Him glory, then I rest in the knowledge that He hears my prayers and He will do it. I pray this first thing in the morning along with giving thanks for the new day, and telling Him how much I love Him and what an awesome, all powerful, merciful, loving God I serve. By giving thanks and praise for the new day and asking Him to direct our thoughts, words and deeds, we are focusing on His will for our lives.

Scripture tells us, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us--whatever we ask--we know we have whatever we ask of Him." 1 John 5: 14 -- 15. It takes time, studying God's word and praying always, to trust that the Holy Spirit really is with you and that He is leading and guiding you in all you do and say.

Jesus knows our hearts and how we want to tell others about Him or act in a way that shows we are a "new creation" in Him. We, also, want others to know how good it is to follow our Lord Jesus. Just remember, He will use whatever you say for His glory even if it is not right. And if you fall back into bad habits of speech, then ask God to help you say good things for Him instead of the sinful things from your old life. Always tell Him you feel terrible for the sin and ask for forgiveness. Rest in the knowledge that God loves you and will never leave you.

You are not alone in your walk. Ask for prayer from other Christians, and get advice from your pastor or someone who has been a Christian for awhile that you trust. This is why we have the church--to help each other. God bless you, David, in your journey.
