Obviously there was a serious break down or lack of communication & compassion between husband and wife here, which would certainly not represent true martial relationship recommended in bible. Was she perhaps having her period? Was she pregnant? Was she ill. There could have been a multitude of good reasons why she could not or should not have appeared, but doesn't seem she offered to tell him and likewise nor did he ask. Seems to me that instead of listening to other people, if he cared for her as a husband should, and she wasn't responding as he thought she should or normally would, why didn't he care enough to go to her and find out what was going on or at least send someone to find out what problem was. Likewise she should have realized what position she was putting him in in front of his "friends" and offered explanation that would have allowed him to save "face".
