We must respect and love our ancestors, but worship God alone and no other Gods, for it is written in the 10 commandments.

What does the Bible say about ancestor worship?

Scripture teaches that worship is directed to God alone, and no spiritual honour is given to human beings who have died. The Bible presents God as the only source of guidance, protection, and truth. Because of this, any practice that seeks spiritual help from ancestors is treated as a misuse of devotion.

The Old Testament contains clear warnings against rituals that attempt to reach the dead or gain information from them. These practices are linked with nations that did not follow God, and Israel was instructed to avoid them completely. God called His people to rely on His voice, His law, and His appointed messengers. Turning toward the dead for spiritual influence was viewed as a rejection of God's authority.

Scripture teaches that the dead have no active role in the lives of the living. They do not return, communicate, or shape events on earth. God alone governs the unseen realm, and He alone holds power over life and death. Because of this, attempts to contact ancestors place trust in a source Scripture does not recognise as valid.

Christ's teaching strengthens this principle. He directs His followers to pray to God, depend on God's wisdom, and walk in obedience to God's will. Christ never assigns spiritual authority to ancestors, nor does He encourage rituals that elevate them. He focuses on devotion to God and faithful living in the present.

The Bible does teach honour for parents and elders, but this honour is expressed through respect, care, and remembrance. It is not expressed through worship, ritual offerings, or spiritual petitions. Honour is a moral responsibility, while worship is an act reserved for God alone.

In summary, Scripture presents ancestor worship as a practice that diverts spiritual devotion away from God. The Bible calls God's people to trust Him fully, avoid practices that seek contact with the dead, and recognise that all spiritual authority rests with God.

Scripture teaches that worship is directed to God alone, and no spiritual devotion is given to the dead. The Bible rejects practices that seek guidance or influence from ancestors, because God provides direction through His word and His Spirit.

The dead have no role in shaping life on earth, and attempts to reach them place trust outside God's authority. Scripture calls for honour toward parents and elders, but worship belongs solely to God.
