I can't cite a specific verse of Scripture, but my idea would be that Aaron's sons were chosen because they would have been descended from Abraham through his son Isaac, his grandson Jacob, and his great-grandson Levi on both their father's and mother's sides. Although Moses was also a descendant of Levi, as well as Aaron's brother, Moses' sons Gershom and Eliezer (mentioned in Exodus 18:1-4) were born to a non-Jewish (Midianite) mother, because of the circumstances of Moses' marriage (Exodus 2:11-22). (The Midianites were descended from the sons that Abraham had with Keturah, whom Abraham married after the death of Sarah (the mother of Isaac, and thus the grandmother of Jacob, and the great-grandmother of Levi (Genesis 25:1-4)).
