God is a lot like us or should I say we are a lot like him. He thinks and once his thoughts are solidified he speaks. He feels and is reception of all of the accolades we can bestow on him just like we are happy and overwhelmed when we are honored for some act accomplished. He is oftentimes saddened through people’s rejection of his Son like we become disappointed when one of our children gets out of line. He is oftentimes happy, like when Jesus was born because he knew reconciliation and or the redemptive process was going to finally take place i.e., like we are happy when we give birth. He never sleeps only by choice. He hates wrong and he despises wickedness just like we despise when some injustice is done to us or someone we love. He is full of compassion, just like us we become when catastrophic or disastrous acts hit our country. God is not easily provoked to anger, he is forgiving, and he has a great since of humor. He can even be sarcastic. God is a lot like us but on a higher echelon in his thoughts and ways.

The best way to discover God is to find Jesus. In Hebrews 1:3 the bible says "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty in heaven." Jesus himself said "If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him" (John 14:7). "...Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father..." (John 14:9). "Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work" (John 14:10). Every thought, every word, every deed recorded in the gospel books about the human life of Jesus, reveals something important about God. In fact, every part of the bible is written to tell us (speak directly) or illustrate (show by example) or illuminate (show by a picture) what God is like. Over the years I have used a book called "Celebration of Praise" by Dick Eastman, to help me focus my daily worship time with God. The book uses words and bible references to describe the nature and character of God. Following are some references from this book to help us discover what God is like. The Nature of God: Complexity (Isaiah 9:6-7), Eternity (Revelation 1:8), Incarnation (Hebrew 1:3), Infinity (Psalm 90:1,2,4), Immensity (1 Kings 8:27), Immutability (Hebrew 13:8; James 1:17), Reality (John 17:3), Self-sufficiency (Psalm 72:1-20), Simplicity (Psalm 78:1-8), Totality (2 Samuel 22:31-37), Unity (John 17:21-23). The Character of God: Able (2 Timothy 1:7,8,12), Accessible (Ephesians 2:17-18), Available (Psalm 45:1-3,11), Beautiful (Psalm 27:4), Changeless (Psalm 102:25-27), Complete (Colossians 1:17-20), Creative (Isaiah 45:18), Excellent (Psalm 8:1), Faithful (Lamentations 3:21-24), Forgiving (Psalm 103:8-12), Generous (2 Peter 3:7-8), Glorious (Psalm 145:5,12), Good (Psalm 34:8,9), Gracious (Isaiah 30:18-19), Great (Psalm 145:1-3), Healthful (Psalm 147:1-3), Holy (Isaiah 6:1-3), Infinite (Psalm 147:2-5), Invincible (Psalm 24:7-8), Joyful (Isaiah 55:12), Just (Psalm 89:13-14), Kind (Isaiah 54:7,8,10), Knowing (Rom 11:33,34,36), Loving (Rom 8:35-39), Majestic (Psalm 45:3,4,6), Measureless (Isaiah 40:26-28), Merciful (Psalm 62:11,12), Mighty (Ephesians 1:19-20), Patient (Romans 15:4-6), Peaceful (Philippians 4:6,7,9), Powerful (Isaiah 40:29-31), Present (Psalm 139:7-10), Radiant (Isaiah 60:1,2,19), Reliable (Numbers 23:19-20), Responsive (Psalm 57:1-3), Righteous (Jeremiah 23:5-6), Secure (Deuteronomy 33:26-27), Sovereign (Daniel 2:20-22), Spotless (1 Peter 1:18-19), Stable (Psalm 62:5-7), Steadfast (Deuteronomy 31:6,8), Strong (Isaiah 41:10), Sufficient (2 Corinthians 3:5-6), Timeless (2 Peter 3:7-8), Truthful (Psalm 100:4-5), Unique (Isaiah 46:9-10), Victorious (Deuteronomy 20:1,4), Wise (Proverbs 2:1-7), Wonderful (Psalm 40:5). If we really want to know what God is like, here is an approach to consider. Select one attribute listed above per day, or per week, and meditate on it throughout the day. Review the referenced bible verses and ask the Holy Spirit to give us his favourite verses that speak to each attribute. Then as other verses come to mind, look them up and meditate on them throughout the day. May God bless your desire to know what he is like. May it lead you to worship him in Spirit and in truth.

What is God like? The Bible declares that God is Spirit, that He is not limited to body, shape, force or boundaries. He is absolutely immeasurable and unfathomable to eyes that are limited to physical things. He can be everywhere at once. He has unlimited wisdom, power, love and mercy. When Jesus came to earth, He showed us the Father (John 14:7-9). Through Jesus, we understand that God seeks to save the lost (Luke 19:10). He is compassionate (Matthew 14:14), merciful (Luke 6:36), and forgiving (Matthew 9:1-8). At the same time, Jesus shows us that God will judge unrepentant sin (Luke 13:5) and that God is angry with those who live falsely and refuse to acknowledge the truth (Matthew 23). Most of all, Jesus showed us that God is love (1 John 4:8). It was in love that God sent His Son into the world (John 3:16). It was in love that Jesus died for sinners (Romans 5:8). It is in love that He still calls sinners to repentance to experience the grace of God and to be called the children of God (1 John 3:1). "For Jehovah loveth justice, And forsaketh not his saints; They are preserved for ever: But the seed of the wicked shall be cut off."—PSALM 37:28.ESV God always does what is right. In fact, "it is unthinkable for the true God to act wickedly, for the Almighty to do wrong!" (Job 34:10) His judgments are upright, as the psalmist said when addressing Jehovah: "You will judge the peoples fairly." (Psalm 67:4) Because "Jehovah sees into the heart," he cannot be fooled by hypocrisy but is always able to perceive the truth and make accurate judgments. (1 Samuel 16:7) Furthermore, God is aware of every act of injustice and corruption on earth, and he has promised that soon, "But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And the treacherous shall be rooted out of it."—Proverbs 2:22. ESV. We benefit from another expression of God's love: prayer. The Bible urges us: "In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."—Philippians 4:6, 7. ESV Conclusion There is no description which fully explains what God is like. The Bible gives us glimpses of him and describes some of his characteristics, such as his love, compassion, power, and creativity. God is holy – perfect and blameless. But there are aspects of God we cannot grasp because they lie beyond our comprehension. God is all-seeing and all-knowing. We cannot hide from him. He knows our thoughts. In fact, the Bible book of Psalms says God knows us even before we are born, "You created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb... You have searched me, and you know me… You are familiar with all my ways… before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely." The Bible book of Genesis says he made us 'in his image'. He has given us the capacity to be immensely creative and to love unconditionally; we, too, have a sense of justice, morality, and a spirituality that sets us apart from other living creatures. God remains intimately involved in the world he made. After Jesus had returned to heaven, he sent the Holy Spirit to live in people who are followers of Christ. And he wants an ongoing relationship with all people. That's what humanity was made for. God purposed that humans be close to him. It is clear from Paul's words that God wants us to be close to him. Does God care about me? Rather than portraying God as aloof from humanity, the Bible says: Acts 17: 27: ESV, "That they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." His Word assures us that he is, not far off, but near to all those calling upon him."—Psalm 145:18. Paul was telling the Athenians and telling humanity that the true God wants us to know him.
