We know from 1 Samuel 18:1 that Jonathan loved David. Second Samuel 1:26 records David's lament after Jonathan's death, in which he said that his love for Jonathan was more wonderful than the love ...

The relationship between David and Jonathan is one of the best examples we have of what a wholesome and pure relationship between two people of the same sex can look like.

God created us as relational beings. The two greatest commands are 1) Love God, and 2) Love Others. The 10 commandments can be broken down into either a failure to love God or a failure to love others. All sin, at its core is either a failure to love God or to love others.

This is how we were created - relational beings.

David and Jonathan had a truly rare and beautiful friendship. Something all of us should pray for. To have a friend that you can be completely open with, have complete trust in, confide in, and truly love is something special and admirable. It's a real shame that people today read that and wonder if there was a homosexual element to it. I think that shows just how much perspective and understanding about relationships we've lost.

If you read 1 and 2 Samuel beginning in chapter 17 in the Bible you will see that after King Saul saw young David kill the giant Goliath, Saul kept young David like a son (17:58 to 18:2-3) and Saul's real son young Jonathon became like a brother and life-long best friend with David. And Saul gave his daughter Michal to David as his first wife (18:27). Later when David ran away (19:18) King Saul gave Michal to another man as a wife (25:44), but in 2 Sam 3:14 he got her back. You can also see in 25:43-44 David had two other wives. David had a total of three wives. In 24:11 and 16 David and Saul call each other Father and Son. Brotherly love can can be stronger than love from a woman and this is what David was singing in 2 Samuel 1:26.
