Deliverance is defined as "a rescue from bondage or danger." Deliverance in the Bible is the acts of God whereby He rescues His people from peril. In the Old Testament, deliverance is focused prima...

Luke 4:18; The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

I know many ministers that claim to have a “deliverance” ministry but most of the people that are being “delivered” are people that already “know” the Lord and profess to be saved. In the literal sense, to deliver is to take something from one place to another; pizza delivery drivers deliver, the US Postal Service delivers and so do FedEx and UPS!

All jokes aside there’s obviously a dilemma because as Jesus was dying on the cross he said, “It is finished”, meaning that he fulfilled the requirements of the law, but also that he did everything that was necessary for the deliverance of every sinner. I taught recently that deliverance was more physical than spiritual because what Jesus did he did with his physical body and not outside of the body. This was absolutely necessary because much of what people suffer they suffer in the flesh.

Romans 7:14; For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Romans 7:24; O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Paul answers his own question in the following verses:

Romans 8:2-3; For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

We are delivered once, literally taken from one place to another; from darkness to light, from death to life! Jesus does not have to go back up on the cross for anyone because what he did was all-inclusive. People don’t need to be delivered once they accept Christ as their Lord and Savior, what they need is a proper understanding of the finished work of Christ on the cross! I rest my case!

One must not forget one instance in which the devout Jews were delivered, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The King Nebuchanezzar told them and everyone they had to bow to his statue that he had set up on the plain. The bowing was to take place exactly when all present there (and that was required) heard the sound of music.

Wiersbe says, "He [Nebuchanezzar] may have forgotten that he had called their God “the God of gods, the Lord of kings” (Dan. 2:47 nkjv), because he arrogantly asked, “And who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?” (Dan 3:15; and see Ex. 5:2). He was actually claiming to be a god himself! In a short time he would be humbled and have to confess that the God of the Hebrews is “the Most High God” and that nobody should blaspheme His name.

What I like about this dramatic, true story is the faith of the three men. They told the kind, "We WILL NOT bow to your statue because our God is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace. But EVEN IF HE DOES NOT, we will not worship your stupid statue! ["stupid statue" is my paraphrase].

Oswald Chambers says about this story, in Run Today’s Race --

"Faith for my deliverance is not faith in God. Faith means, whether I am visibly delivered or not, I will stick to my belief that God is love. There are some things only learned in a fiery furnace."
