Ideally, public figures (even more than private citizens) would serve as models of commendable or moral individual behavior, especially with respect to avoiding conduct that is condemned by God. However, in the non-theocratic free society (as well as the fallen world in general) in which we live, people are often called on to make practical political choices with regard to candidates for office whose public positions or private behavior are in some respect at variance with each other, or with theological teaching. In addition, there can even be conflict in political life between concepts (such as freedom and equality, for example) that are each (in and of themselves) positive and desirable, but that can result in tension when attempting to accommodate them both in the public arena. Also, people who find one candidate unacceptable on moral grounds may choose (in the name of the achievement of particular goals or objectives) to overlook the actions or positions of another candidate or office holder who is doing things or espousing positions that his or her opponents find equally inexcusable for moral reasons. Each Christian must deal with all these conflicting forces, and make political judgments that, to the greatest extent possible, reflect personal beliefs as to the boundaries of acceptable positions or conduct, Scriptural teaching, and guidance (through God's ordering of events and personal thoughts) received in response to prayer, while also incorporating the same elements and principles in addressing any negative consequences that may result from his or her political decisions.
In my humble opinion that would depend on your personal relationship, if any to the afore mentioned god. And whether there is any meaning to that relationship for you; so that it might cause one to exercise any due diligence in their selection process. (2 Corinthians 11:14; Mark 4:21; Mark 4:23) The American trinity as written in our founding documents are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit Of Happiness. Generally do their policies promote these individual thought freedoms with a balanced governance commensurate with the liberty of the individual’s own pursuit of happiness? Or do they exhibit a totalitarian coercion toward restricting free thought thus forcing only their group think with it's limited permitted actions by their now forced faithful victims? (Isaiah 30:9; Isaiah 30:10) Do their policies and actions seem to value the things of your god or do they exhibit things that any free born citizen could view as abnormal or even as an abomination per their own private pieties? (Ecclesiastes 10:2; Matthew 25:33-34) Consider when power is given by the governed would they use it to force capitulation of it’s victims at it’s own bureaucratic altars, as we are currently seeing in Virginia whose state's motto irony is "death to tyrants". (Proverbs 16:5; Hosea 5:4) Bottom Line: Jude-Christian big "G" values If the afore mentioned god is in fact the God of the Bible and YOU are a solider in HIS army; then the answer is very simple friend. (Hosea 4:6; Matthew 16:2-3) The Lord said you will know them by their fruit and currently only one political party promotes the wholesale murder of the unborn and now even the recently born. (Matthew 7:23) Little "g" values Now if he is another god, for example say of your making; then all is permitted friend. (Deuteronomy 23:18; Leviticus 17:7; Judges 17:6; Matthew 22:29) "Pray for the welfare of the government, for if people do not fear the government's authority, members of society will swallow each other alive." ~The Talmud “Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever” ~Thomas Jefferson "Before God we are all equally wise and equally foolish" ~Albert Einstein In the Lord’s freedom now may we use it wisely……warrior on
