God is using the nation of Israel to 1) ILLUSTRATE how he leads people to repentance, and 2) FORESHADOW how he will save all believers from slavery to sin through the sacrifice of his Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. We can enjoy life and be prosperous in this world for a time, but our spiritual slavery to sin will lead to great suffering, like the nation of Israel experienced in Egypt. God sends his Holy Spirit to lead us to repentance. He makes us feel guilty and ashamed about our sins. When we hear his voice, confess our sins, repent, and believe in Jesus, then we receive his salvation and are set free from our spiritual slavery to sin. Many people don’t listen to God’s voice so he turns up the heat by sending calamities into our lives to get our attention. Some people will turn to God when they’ve reached a desperate state and are finally ready to be set free. Once we choose to believe in Jesus and receive his salvation, the power of sin, death and all evil forces is broken in our lives. We receive the Holy Spirit to guide and teach us. We begin an intimate personal relationship with God. We receive the gift of eternal life and enter our promised land (all of God’s blessings and promises for today and all time). Then our personal journey to experiencing freedom from slavery to sin becomes the illustration God uses to tell others the good news of his salvation through Jesus Christ.
Exodus 9 God is displaying His mighty power. In Egypt many gods were worshipped. Hathor and Apis (gods worshipped in Egypt) were depicted as cattle. Thus God strikes the livestock. Goddess, Sekhmet, was a warrior and goddess of healing. Sunu was god of the sun, and Isis was goddess of fertility and motherhood. These "gods" had no power over God. God proved this with the boils in Exodus 9: 8-12. Nut, the sky goddess could not prevent the great hailstorm. Exodus 9:18,19. Osirius, the crop/fertility god did not save the crops. Only those who respected God were spared! Exodus 9:20,21 God declares that this story will be known throughout the world. (Exodus9:14) Exodus 20 - Our God is a jealous God. We are to have no other gods. Not even technology!
