Why would a wife urge her husband to have an affair (Genesis 16:2)?

Genesis 16:1 - 16

NKJV - 1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her." And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

I would say that Sarai was driven by desperation about wanting to provide Abram with an heir, which was very important at that time and in that culture.

At the same time, however (and even though the Bible earlier said (Genesis 15:6) that God reckoned Abram's faith to him as righteousness), both Abram and Sarai apparently lacked sufficient faith in God's promise of an heir to Abram. (If their faith had been sufficient, neither of them should have thought of, or agreed to, going outside their marital relationship for that purpose.)
