Why did Zechariah have to be made silent for not believing the Angel Gabriel when he was told he and Elizabeth would have a son?

Zechariah was made silent because he doubted the angel Gabriel's message that he and Elizabeth would have a son in their old age, despite being a priest who should have trusted in God's power. According to Luke 1:20, this silence was a direct consequence of his unbelief, acting as both a disciplinary measure and a sign, preventing him from spreading doubt until the promise was fulfilled.

Reasons for Zechariah's silence included:

Doubt in God's Promise: Despite praying for a child, Zechariah doubted the divine message from Gabriel, questioning how it could be possible given their old age.

Higher Responsibility: As a priest in the temple, Zechariah was held to a higher standard of faith than others, and his hesitation was seen as a lack of faith in God's power.

A "Sign" of Promise: His silence functioned as a sign that magnified the miraculous nature of John the Baptist's birth, ultimately proving God's faithfulness, and it was lifted only after Zechariah confirmed his son's name, demonstrating renewed faith.

Overwhelmed with doubt, Zechariah asked for a confirming sign. Gabriel quickly pointed out that the appearance of God's messenger in the temple should have been enough of a sign: "I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring you this good news! But now, since you didn't believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time" (Luke 1:19–20, NLT).

Zechariah was punished with muteness because his question expressed doubt and demanded proof of Gabriel's message, whereas Mary's question was one of faith, asking for understanding. Zechariah, a seasoned priest, demanded a sign ("How can I be sure?"), while Mary asked how it was possible ("How will this be?")

As a religious expert in the temple, Zechariah should have believed. His questioning of the angel—citing his and his wife's old age—showed a lack of faith in God's power to create life, similar to Sarah in the Old Testament.

As a priest and a student of scripture, Zechariah should have known the story of Abraham and Sarah, who conceived in old age. His doubt was seen as a failure of his religious duty to believe in God's promises.

The silence was a temporary consequence—lasting for nearly a year—until the baby was born.

His speech was restored only after the child was born, and Zechariah obediently wrote, "His name is John," confirming his faith had been renewed.

First I have to say I believe you are referring to Zacharias, not Zechariah.

In Luke 1:18: "And Zecharias said to the angel, 'How shall I know this? I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years?'"

The angry Gabriel answered him. And then he told Zecharias he would be mute.

Zecharias completely ignored the fact that he was being visited by an angel! This is/was a divine messenger!

He was asking for a sign! This indicated a lack of faith! Zecharias was a priest!

There is another lesson in this if you think carefully!

This story is in Luke chapter 1.

Zechariah is a whole different book next to the last in your Old Testament.
