According to verses 2–3, what blessings come from being connected to other believers?
Answer: Paul lists several blessings:
Encouraged hearts – not easily discouraged or deceived
Commentary Explanation: The Greek word parakaleō means to be "comforted, strengthened, or encouraged" in one's inner being. This encouragement is not merely emotional but deeply spiritual, fortifying believers against false teachings and challenges to their faith. As Adam Clarke notes, this refers to "continual happiness in God, having constant affiance in Him".
Knit together in love – unity and mutual support
Commentary Explanation: The Greek verb symbibazō (from which we get "symbiosis") means to be "compacted, united, or knit together" like the joints and ligaments of a human body. Love serves as "the bond and element of perfect knitting together; the antidote to the dividing schismatical effect of false doctrine". This unity reflects the love within the Godhead and the love of Christ for His church.
Full assurance of understanding – confidence in what we believe
Commentary Explanation: The term plērophoria refers to "firm persuasion, settled conviction". This assurance originates from genuine understanding of spiritual realities--who God is, who Christ is, and what our hope is. Paul's accumulation of phrases ("understanding," "full assurance," "riches," "all riches") emphasizes "how he desires to impress them with the momentous importance of the subject in hand".
Knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ – clarity that Christ alone is the source
Commentary Explanation: In Scripture, a "mystery" (mystērion) is not a riddle but "a divine truth once hidden, now revealed". The mystery is not merely something Christ explains--He Himself is the mystery. Christ is "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) and the one "in whom the inscrutable nature of God... is revealed to us".
Access to all treasures of wisdom and knowledge – not hidden in secret teachings
Commentary Explanation: The phrase "all the treasures" confronts competing claims to secret or fragmented spiritual insight. As one commentary states, "Paul's 'all' confronts competing claims to fragmented spiritual insight". Since Christ made and sustains every realm (Colossians 1:16-17), "the sum total of all true principles resides in Him". The UBS Handbook notes this emphasizes both "Christ's sufficiency (all of God's wisdom and knowledge are revealed by him) and Christ's uniqueness (in him and nowhere else)".
