How can I repent of having sex before marriage if I am now married?

I fell into sin and the ways of the world and my husband and I had sex before marriage. We are now married but I am feeling so bad and guilty about my past. I am trying to give my life back to God but feel like I cannot be forgiven for this. I have prayed and asked for forgiveness. Can He forgive me?

Matthew 4:17

ESV - 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Dear Anonymous, to repent means to change the mind. You already repented the moment you and your husband decided to get married.

If you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you have been forgiven of all of your sins, past, present and future.

Romans 8:1 says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus."

Every born again believer in Jesus Christ, has a new identity! 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new."

Please do not allow guilt to control your life when Jesus has already freed you from condemnation!

Dear Anonymous,

First of all, take comfort in the grace and mercy of God. There is NO SIN He won't forgive except the unpardonable sin of rejecting Jesus completely, which you have NOT committed.

I was married to a pastor for almost 37 years before his recent passing, and we did a LOT of marriage counseling through the years. One of the biggest barriers to marital bliss that came up was the issue of premarital sex. Often, one or both of the people we were counseling had had premarital sex, and guilt over their past behavior kept them from a healthy relationship with their current spouse. This guilt also interfered with the couple enjoying the sex life God intended for them.

This is nothing more than a sinister tool of the devil to keep you and others like you from having a joyful, blessed marriage. Revelation 12:10 refers to Satan as "the accuser of the brethren," and he loves to throw our sin back into our faces. When he does this, he is LYING about the power and completeness of God's forgiveness for ALL of our sins.

Romans 8:1 says this in contrast to the lies of the devil: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." So whenever you feel condemned, recognize that this is the devil trying to keep you bound and frozen in guilt over your past sins.

Here is what I have always told people in this situation: Memorize scriptures that affirm your status of being FORGIVEN of all sins, and quote them back to the devil whenever he comes and tries to lie to you. The scripture I quoted above is a good one to memorize. Here are some others:

1 John 1:9 — Promises that confessing our sins brings God's faithful forgiveness and purification from unrighteousness.

Psalm 103:12 — Uses the imagery of east and west to show how completely God removes our transgressions from us.

Isaiah 43:25 — States that God blots out our transgressions for His own sake and chooses to remember our sins no more, wiping away the record of our past.

Ephesians 1:7 — Highlights that redemption and the forgiveness of sins come through Christ in accordance with God's rich grace.

Micah 7:18–19 — Celebrates God's unique compassion in hurling our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

My sister wasn't a virgin when she was married, and she told me that she studied scriptures like the ones above as she dealt with the same guilt you're experiencing. She was marrying a virgin, and she felt like she didn't deserve him. She told me that as she studied the word of God and his forgiveness, a moment came when she felt like God so completely wiped away her sin and guilt that she actually felt like God restored her virginity. This freed her from ALL guilt, and it also freed her to enjoy sex with her husband.

God wants you to be free from ALL guilt. Open yourself up to Him and to His word, and He will heal you and set you free.
